Straw is the lovely by-product from such crops as Barley and Oats. When the grain is harvested, the stalks left behind dry and become known as straw.
Oat straw is good for bedding
Barley straw is good for bedding and feed.
Other crops that make straw are Wheat, Bean haulm, Triticale, Oil Seed Rape, Rye amongst others.
We supply Barley Straw on our farm. Occasionally we have made some of the above.
The difference between hay and haylage is the amount of drying time and how much moisture content is left behind. Hay has a moisture content 15% and below. Haylage goes up to 50% moisture but is usually around 30-35%. This also means it has higher sugars than hay and is not recommended for any animals that is sensitive to a high sugar content.
Every year we make small bale hay. We have sadly had to stop delivering it due to ill health and the requirement for manual handling. We do, however still allow for collections.
We also make wrapped hay and haylage. These bales are 4ft 6 by 80cm x 70cm and have between 8-10 small bales in them. We deliver these in 3 bale deliveries, or you are welcome to collect them. Collection will require a open backed vehicle or trailer.
If you’re interested in either of these, please contact Richard on 07775 744763. He prefers phone calls, as texts and emails may have to wait until either of us have time to deal with them.
